ABOUT ME

Hello Neighbors,

My name is Randall Dear and I would like to tell you a little about myself as I seek your support for the Grossmont Union High School District (GUHSD) Board.  I grew up in a small town in Alabama where I was the oldest of three. We were raised by remarkable parents that instilled in me a strong work ethic, discipline, a sense of adventure, and the importance of education.  Growing up in a small town taught me the value of being part of a community where everyone works together for the betterment of all.  While not everyone may share the same opinions, there was respect towards one another and a shared love for the community we lived in.  I contribute much of my career success to this ability to develop professional relationships built on respect and trust.

Education has always been a cornerstone in my life.   I earned a Master's degree in Business Administration and two bachelor degrees (Marketing & Marine Biology) from Auburn University.  I was a recipient of several scholarships and graduated with honors for each degree.

After completing a summer at Dauphin Island Sea Lab and completing a marine research internship  at Disneyworld’s Living Seas Aquarium, my sense of adventure took me to California where I took a job in San Diego with the US Navy Marine Mammal Program.  My plan was to play with â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹dolphins for a year or so and then move on to real career.  However, within a year of being in San Diego, I met my wife and we now have 3 beautiful children.  Twenty seven years later, I have been blessed with a very rewarding exciting career.  Working with the Navy Marine Mammal Program, I have been involved with marine mammal research for over 25 years.  As a Supervisor, I have managed a large staff of animal trainers and have worked with some of the most respected researchers in the world furthering our knowledge of marine mammals.  As part of this job, I have been fortunate to work with beluga whales in Washington state, study the effects of the BP Oil spill on marine mammals in the Gulf of Mexico, and perform hearing tests on orcas and pilot whales at Seaworld.  A large aspect of my job with the NMMF is conservation and education. Whether it be delivering presentations at conferences, hosting a table at a science fair, conducting tours, or visiting local schools, education has been a priority and one of the more rewarding aspects of my job.

Another cornerstone in my life has been sports.  While attending Auburn University, I worked with the Mens’s Basketball team and while living in Washington, I was a volunteer basketball coach at Gig Harbor High School. Since moving to Spring Valley over 20 years ago, I have been involved in coaching youth soccer, basketball, baseball, and football.  For several years, I enjoyed announcing basketball and football games for Foothills High School.

Now that my kids are older and I am entering a new chapter in my life, I began looking for new challenges and adventures.  I have always believed that it is our imperative to leave a better world for our kids and to prepare them to thrive in that world.  I am not sure we are leaving a better world.  For that reason, I am running for office because I want to part of the solution.  The solution to a bright future lies with our children.  As a Board Member for GUHSD, I believe I can work to accomplish this by providing a safe environment for our kids to learn. Building strong trusting, transparent relationships between the student, teacher, and parents is paramount to a good education.  I would work with our teachers, coaches, and counselors to ensure they have all the tools they need to help students find their desired path, be it theater, music, sports, STEM, or trade careers.  As a Board member, I promise transparency and honesty as I work to ensure fiscal responsibility and accountability with our staff.  I look forward to working together with you to making our high schools a safe place that prepares our children for a brighter future.  Please vote Randall Dear for Grossmont Union High School District Trustee.  Together, we can make this dream come true.

Thank you for your support,

Randall Dear
